Determinants of electricity production from renewable source excluding hydroelectricity in selected East African countries: Panel ARDL approach

Though East Africa has ample resource endowments for electricity production, the region lowest performance in generating electricity, and millions of people are living without access to electricity. To fill gap countries used fossil fuels as major source energy, but production from a renewable is lower. Therefore, this study aimed identify determinant factors resources excluding hydropower sources. Panel data five African period 1998 2019 were used, it was examined using pooled mean group panel ARDL estimation technique. The result revealed that long- short-run GDP per capita growth, population energy consumption capita, import have positive significant effect on other than hydropower, while political instability, oil, gas, coal negative effect. However, short run, use rent percentage effects, respectively, long two variables no Error correction coefficient 0.64, which indicates deviation long-run disequilibrium adjusts toward equilibrium at rate 64% year. Based results, recommends government improve growth by quality education, lower lending interest rate, improving stability through controlling internal conflicts caused differences religion ethnicity, security.
